PrismTech ‘Changes the Rules’ – Brings the Advantages of Open Source Licensing to Low-Latency, Data Caching, and Event Processing Systems
Boston, MA, USA – January 13th, 2009 - PrismTech™, an acknowledged leader in advanced software integration and infrastructure solutions, announced today that it is releasing its OpenSplice™ DDS low-latency data distribution software as Open Source software licensed under LGPL licensing. This Open Source code base is supported by a range of optional subscription packages from PrismTech that include professional support, productivity and optimization tools, connectors, and other advanced product options.
PrismTech is one of the pioneers and leading vendors of ‘packaged Open Source’ middleware and has a long and successful track record of providing CORBA solutions using this model. This initiative will leverage all of PrismTech’s expertise in this area to provide a superior DDS solution.
This initiative brings to the Open Source community an advanced data distribution technology fully compliant with the OMG’s DDS v1.2 specification and field-proven with deployments in defense & aerospace, capital markets, ground & air transportation, and SCADA.
This initiative also responds to growing customer demand to bring the proven value of the Open Source software model to low-latency, data caching, and event processing systems. A recent example of this market trend is the US National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 (H.R. 5658) which includes language that calls for all DoD agencies to consider open source software when procuring manned or unmanned aerial vehicles. Including such language is a milestone for the Open Source movement and the US Federal Government.
By moving OpenSplice DDS licensing to Open Source, PrismTech delivers the below ‘game changing’ advantages to systems integrators, OEMs, and ISVs: the application developers who require high-performance integration software to deliver their own high-performance solutions.
As broadly recognized today, Open Source licensing helps reduce risk, accelerate innovation, and proliferate use:-
• Openness helps avoid both technical and commercial vendor lock-in.
• The Lesser General Public License (“LGPL”) permits users commercially licensed applications to use the Open Source OpenSplice DDS without their applications becoming subject to the LGPL terms.
• PrismTech provides a range of optional subscription levels that provide commercial support and value-adding products to meet the needs of any user.
• Leveraging the potential of user and independent Open Source communities accelerates product development (beyond the means of a single vendor) in pursuit of even greater functionality, performance, security, and robustness.
• Propelling Real-time, low-latency, integration software into new markets, such as financial trading systems, telecoms infrastructure and industrial SCADA through low-cost, easy-access, entry-level options.
“Our system integrator, OEM, and ISV customers are 100% behind OpenSplice DDS and the DDS standard”, said Steve Jennis, SVP, Corporate Development at PrismTech. “They want to see proliferation of the product through broad-based uptake in many application and industry sectors. They want to see a large community of DDS developers, and they want access to the source code to accelerate user-led innovation and manage the risk inherent in mission-critical deployments. Open Source licensing is the obvious way to meet these demands and PrismTech knows how to market and support Open Source middleware as well as anyone. These factors, together with a clear end-user preference for an Open Source procurement model, make this decision an easy one for PrismTech. In fact we expect, and are planning for, a much more rapid uptake of DDS middleware under the Open Source model thus providing more customers for our support services and complementary products. We see this as a win/win/win for our customers, PrismTech and DDS-compliant middleware.”
Richard Soley, Ph.D., chairman and CEO of the OMG international standards consortium added, “Open Standards and Open Source licensing strategies are synergistic and universally recognized as adding significant value for users of information technology. PrismTech has long been a strong supporter and proponent of both, and a crucial leader in the definition and implementation of the OMG's Data Distribution Specification (DDS) standard. The availability of PrismTech's leading implementation in Open Source, for the first time, eases adoption of this critical standard - by leveraging Open Source licensing and the Open Source community to: accelerate innovation, facilitate proliferation, and ensure security of supply. PrismTech is not only providing great support for DDS (as they have for many other OMG standards) but setting the standard themselves for open implementation.”
PrismTech is a leader in high-performance integration software, which is increasingly used in defense, financial, and telecoms applications to meet the deterministic and low-latency demands of today’s time-critical systems. This announcement is therefore game-changing for the DDS community and for the prospects of DDS uptake in new vertical markets. Rather than supporting the narrow, traditional model of high license fees and single vendor support, PrismTech believes that pervasive uptake of its Open Source DDS software, enabled by low entry-level costs, openness, and standards-compliance, will provide the winning formula for OpenSplice DDS versus products such as IBM’s MQSeries, TIBCO’s Rendezvous, and RTI’s Data Distribution Service. Moreover, as the DDS implementation with the longest heritage, greatest robustness and most proven mission-critical applications, PrismTech believes that OpenSplice DDS offers the highest quality and most functionally complete DDS implementation available….it is anything but an early stage, freelance, Open Source effort.
Open Source OpenSplice DDS therefore truly “changes the game” in both the DDS market and in the broader high-performance integration software market. It combines the best aspects of Open Source licensing with high quality, proven code and comprehensive support options.
Open Source OpenSplice DDS will be generally available for download early in 2Q 2009.
