PrismTech Helps Hughes Migrate to Open Source Middleware Technology

31 March 2009

Enables Hughes to smoothly migrate to PrismTech’s OpenFusion CORBA solution

Hughes LogoBoston, MA, USA – March 31, 2009 - PrismTech™, an acknowledged leader in advanced software integration and infrastructure solutions, today announced that they have successfully helped Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes) migrate their VisionEMS Network Management product to OpenFusion® JacORB, a market leading open source CORBA® implementation. Hughes is the global market leader in providing broadband satellite networks and services for enterprises, governments, small businesses, and consumers. Hughes’ decision to move to an open source ORB implementation was based on a number of technical and commercial factors, but most importantly, their key objective was to achieve long-term security of supply to meet their ongoing middleware requirements at a reasonable cost.

Standards and interoperability deliver freedom of choice for users to migrate to lower cost ORB middleware. ORB source code access and the open source licensing model help ensure security of supply and protect customers from vendor lock in. Open source CORBA products can reduce ORB cost of ownership significantly. This is achieved by eliminating license costs for both development and deployment. Typically users pay a single annual fee, which is determined by total annual requirements. With open source products such as OpenFusion JacORB, there are also no upgrade license fees when newer versions of the product are made available and no costs associated with ensuring license key compliance.

To make the process of migrating to OpenFusion JacORB as painless and cost effective as possible, Hughes leveraged PrismTech’s ORB expertise to outsource the major re-engineering work of their VisionEMS product to PrismTech’s Professional Service Organization. Once the code had been migrated successfully and tested thoroughly, re-certification and final validation of the migrated application was carried out by Hughes product experts. The complete migration project was completed in just 12 weeks.

OpenFusion JacORB is a mature, feature rich, high performance Java™ ORB implementation. It supports the very latest version of the CORBA standard (CORBA 3) and over the past few years has seen massive adoption and wide scale deployment in important business sectors such as Aerospace and Defense, Commercial Telecommunications, and Manufacturing. OpenFusion JacORB 2.3 is the most robust and most highly optimized JacORB release to date. It offers excellent feature and platform coverage, including support for the very latest operating systems and JVMs.

Many customers have already switched from their incumbent ORB technology to OpenFusion JacORB. With fears over security of supply, as some existing vendors fail to invest in and move away from CORBA technology, the knock on effect is that the trend for CORBA customers to move to innovative, cost-effective open source ORB technology will continue.

"OpenFusion JacORB is an excellent choice for developers seeking a high-quality, innovative, and cost-effective alternative to their existing proprietary Java ORB," said Andrew Foster, product manager, PrismTech. "For customers who do not already use OpenFusion JacORB but would like to leverage both its technical and commercial benefits, PrismTech has developed huge expertise in assisting our customers to migrate from their existing ORB implementations in the most efficient and risk free way possible."

"We were really pleased to work with PrismTech and establish a relationship with a vendor who can satisfy all our long term CORBA needs," said Jeff Biber, vice president, Hughes. "PrismTech’s expertise made the process of migrating our application to OpenFusion JacORB a very straightforward and risk-free process."
