Connecting the world's next generation of robotics systems - Vortex enables real-time data connectivity for advanced communication and control.

Businesses around the globe are increasingly using robotics to automate their workflow processes.  In a recent report, International Data Corporation said robotics as a technology has really reached its tipping point and predicted that worldwide spending on robotics and related services will hit US$135.4 billion by 2019.  Traditionally robotics have been most widely used in industrial manufacturing settings but recent technology innovations combined with the falling price of robotics hardware has meant that industries including healthcare, shipping and logistics, food services, retail, and hospitality are increasingly benefiting from their use.

Robotics come in many different types (such as stationary, wheeled, legged, swimming, flying, rolling, swarm, modular, crawler, snake, micro, nano, soft-elastic, hybrid and autonomous) and have many uses (such as industrial, domestic, medical, service, military, entertainment, space and hobby).  However, what they all have in common is that they have electrical components that power/control the machinery and they contain some level of computer programming code, which allows them to decide when, or how to do something.

Increasingly robotics involve a complex, diverse and distributed set of hardware and software components, which all need to interoperate together in harmony for the system to work efficiently and reliably.  Communications middleware based on the Object Management Group's (OMG) Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard can help provide this interoperability by delivering discovery, serialization, transport and extensive qualities of services (QoS).  For example DDS has been identified as a key technology for the next generation of the Robot Operating System (ROS 2.0).

PrismTech, a global leader in software platforms and tools for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and advanced wireless communications has extensive expreience of providing solutions to a diverse range of customers around the globe. PrismTech's Vortex is the leading open source and commercial implementation of the DDS standard and is proven in numerous robotics projects.
